Part #2 – A Veterans’ Financial Planning Handbook: Goal Setting in Military and Financial Contexts

Introduction

This is the second installment in our series. We are exploring the parallels between military planning and the financial planning process. It focuses on an essential element: goal setting. We draw from the U.S. Army’s Field Manuals and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board’s financial planning steps. We delve into how setting clear objectives is pivotal in both contexts.

Military Objectives: Clarity and Precision

As outlined in FM 5-0 and FM 6-0, setting clear and attainable objectives is critical in military operations. These objectives define the mission’s purpose and end state. They provide a clear direction for all later planning and execution. In military terms, objectives must be SMART. They must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Doing so ensures the mission has a focused and realistic target.

Financial Goals: Personalized and Measurable

Identifying and selecting goals is crucial to financial planning. These goals vary depending on individual circumstances. They include saving for retirement, funding education, buying a home, or creating an emergency fund. Like military objectives, financial goals need to be well-defined and measurable. They provide a framework for developing a tailored financial plan.

The Merit of Broad Financial Goals

Specific goals like saving for retirement or buying a home might feel essential. Yet, they may only encompass part of what financial freedom means to an individual. Life is dynamic, and our aspirations and circumstances can shift. Financial freedom is less about a number and more about the ability to choose how you spend your time, energy, and attention. Make sure you strike a balance between enjoying today and saving for tomorrow.

Aligning with Personal Values

Personal values and priorities are at the forefront of goal setting. It’s about creating a financial situation where economic constraints do not limit choices. Instead, we make our choices based on our individual desires and preferences. This concept allows for a more adaptable and responsive approach to financial planning. Strategies evolve in alignment with changing life situations and values.

Analyzing and Adjusting Goals

Both in military and financial planning, goals are not set in stone. As situations change, we revisit and adjust them. Objectives change as the enemy adapts and unforeseen events occur. In financial planning, goals may evolve due to life changes, economic shifts, or personal priorities.

Conclusion: The Art of Strategic Goal-Setting

Whether in a military or financial context, setting goals provides a strategic direction and a benchmark for success. This stage is crucial as it influences the development of strategies and tactical plans. Understanding the importance of goal setting in both fields highlights their similarities. It underscores the fundamental principle of strategic planning: defining what success looks like.

In my next article, I’ll explore how assessing the current has merit in military and financial planning concepts.
